Want to add a little outdoor life to the home but got brown thumbs? It’s ok! So do we! That’s why succulents and air plants are the way to go! They are very forgiving and that’s why we love them.
You’ll be able to create your own succulent garden with these simple items that can found in your own backyard and around the house!
What You’ll Need:
🌱 Potting Soil
🌱 Rocks (polished pebbles, gravels, etc.)
🌱 Optional Decorations
* When choosing which succulents are right for your garden, you will encounter endless possibilities. You can find a variety of succulents at most nurseries and home improvement stores. If you have an IKEA near you, stop in and see their collection!
Step 1: Fill the bottom of the planter with your base layer (rocks, pebbles, gravel, etc.). This layer is for drainage and simply because succulent roots don’t like to sit in water. Depending on the size of your container, you will want to spread at least ½ “ of drainage material evenly across the entire bottom of your planter.
Step 2: Add soil to the planter. You can use a succulent mix soil or all purpose houseplant potting soil works just fine. Make sure you have enough soil that when you put your plant in, its roots are fully surrounded by soil.
Step 3: Time to add your plant(s)! You can mix multiple types of succulents in each planter if your planter is big enough. If you do decide to use a variety, think about how you want to arrange them first and how they will visually complement each other. Once that’s decided, dig little holes in the soil and gently place plant them.
Step 4: Pack in the soil tightly around them. Add more soil if necessary! Feel free to get creative by adding finishing touches like colorful rocks and stones.
Ta-da! Congratulations on making your own succulent garden! Remember to give it all the love it needs by giving it plenty of light and water when needed (allow the soil to dry out between watering)!
