Summer is here and the temperature is on the raise. Judging by the number of people I saw in the fan and air conditioner aisle at Home Depot this past weekend, keeping your home (and yourself) cool is definitely high on everyone's priority list right now!
Here are some small home hacks to help you fight against the summer heat!
Not only does seasonally switching up your bedding freshen up a room, it’s a great way to keep cool. Save the ooh-la-la satin, silk, or polyester sheets for cooler nights. Light-colored bed linens made of lightweight cotton are excellent for promoting ventilation and airflow in the bedroom! And as an added bonus, buy yourself a buckwheat pillow. They have naturally occurring air space between them and won’t hold body heat like conventional pillows!
Keep Blinds Closed
When it feels like 100° out, you don’t want sun creeping in and heating up your home! Close your blinds and curtains to keep some of the daytime heat! This prevents your home from becoming a miniature greenhouse, which is especially the case for south- and west-facing windows.

Ditch Incandescent Lights
If you ever needed motivation to make the switch to CFLs (compact fluorescent lamps), this is it. Incandescent bulbs waste about 90 percent of their energy in the heat they emit, so tossing them to the curb will make a difference in cooling your home! Fortunately, summer means it stays light until eight or nine at night. Take advantage of natural light as much as possible, and keep rooms cool after dark by using lights minimally.

Plants can keep your house cool because they lose water during transpiration, which cools the air around the plants, leaving it purified and fresh. Some indoor plants to consider are: areca palm, aloe vera, weeping fig, and snake plant!
